Ernest Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea in 1951. This short novel "shows the outcome of one man’s endurance in the midst of defeat, and how the friendship of a young boy gives him hope." (Roso, 200, p.5).
The novel tells us the story of Santiago, a fisherman who "is soon to catch something larger than he can ever imagine" (Roso, 200, p.5). In one part of the novel, Santiago says: "You'll not fish without eating while I'm alive."
Think in the previous quote and answer what it may mean to the characters of the novel. After that, answer what do you think is the story about.
what I think is that the fisherman
I didn't want Santiago to be hungry and from that moment I shared what I caught, i think that he is a good that want that his friend be happy
I think that the fisherman fished another fish that looks like a monster. It Will always difficult to fish that size of fish.
- I think that the above quote could mean that as long as Santiago lives, he will give him food as long as he lives and that he will not have less food when he fishes and will bring what to eat. I think that the story is about a fisherman who went fishing every day and ate what he caught. And where he says "he didn't know that soon he was going to get something bigger", that great is the friendship of a child who would become close to him and then he promises him that as long as he lives, he will never have less food to eat.
- What I understand and I think what the characters things about the quote is that Santiago wants that while he's alive, his friend are gonna eat the fishes that they fish and if they catch a big animal or fish he's gonna share with his new friendship. I think that he want that the his friend always have something to eat, so he said to this friend that quote like showing he that he are thankful with his friend because she help it when he's passing a bad moment.
I think that the novel is about that Santiago was a fisher but one day he catch a huge fish and after that they he start to presume that he was the best fisher in all the world
